Piarom dates come from the date groves around Hajiabad in Hormozgan province, southern Iran, and are among the most prized dates the country exports. They are long, slim and dark chocolate-brown, with a thin skin that clings to the flesh and a semi-dry texture that is firm and chewy but never sticky. The flavour is rich and toffee-like with a hint of cocoa, which is why Piarom is often called the chocolate date.
Because they travel well and keep their shape, Piarom dates are a favourite for gifting. Pakistani families serve them to guests with qehwa or green tea, fill Eid and wedding trays with them, and stuff them with almonds, walnuts or nut butter as a quick alternative to mithai. A box also makes a thoughtful Ramadan present for relatives.
